Former Italy national team and AC Milan player Mattia Caldara has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. According to Caldara, he was unable to return to his previous level of performance following a serious knee injury.

"Dear football, I bid you farewell. These months have been very tough for me.

I’m talking about how my life changed after my knee injury. I couldn’t return to being the old Caldara," the player said.

Caldara’s last club was Modena. He also played for AC Milan, Spezia, Atalanta, and others.

Caldara made two appearances for the Italian national team.
