Former midfielder of the Russian national team and Spain's "Celta" club, Aleksandr Mostovoy, commented on Curaçao's national team qualifying for the World Cup for the first time. "If the World Cup format had not been expanded, this team would never have made it to the tournament.
They should only be happy about it! We're ready to see some exotic teams!
Ranked 82nd in the international rankings? Even being in the top 100 is a good achievement," Mostovoy's statement was quoted by "Sovetskiy Sport" publication.
In recent tournaments, three teams from the North American region (and a fourth via playoffs) were guaranteed participation. This time, the number of direct spots remained unchanged, but the United States, Mexico, and Canada did not participate in the qualification process due to hosting rights.
Nevertheless, Curaçao's team showed a decent result, surpassing Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago in their group. Eleven years ago, the team was ranked 183rd in the international standings.
