The national teams of Mexico and South Africa will face off in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match is set to take place on June 11 at the Azteca Stadium.
Interestingly, these teams also faced each other in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup. At that time, South Africa participated as the host nation, and the match ended in a 1–1 draw.
This will mark the first time in history that an opening game is repeated. Group A also includes the South Korea national team.
The fourth team in the group will be determined through the European playoffs, which could feature Denmark, North Macedonia, the Czech Republic, or Ireland. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
