Former USSR national team goalkeeper Anzor Kavazashvili shared his opinion on Matvei Safonov's situation at PSG. The Russian goalkeeper is expected to start in the Intercontinental Cup final against Flamengo as part of the Paris team’s starting lineup.
Kavazashvili emphasized that in the goalkeeper position, much depends on current form and minimizing errors. He noted that if a goalkeeper plays with confidence and avoids critical mistakes during the game, coaches generally continue trusting them.
“If Safonov is ready and performs better than the injured main goalkeeper Chevalier, he will remain in the starting lineup consistently. That’s how football works: if you don’t ruin the game and perform well, you stay in goal,” Kavazashvili was quoted by Sport-Express.
At the same time, Kavazashvili pointed out that despite Safonov being with the team for a considerable time, he has not yet become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. According to him, if the Russian goalkeeper were superior in quality to his competitor, he would have been playing in the starting lineup from the beginning and not waiting for opportunities.
