Ponomaryov criticized the World Cup expansion and blamed FIFA

Former defender Vladimir Ponomaryov commented on the expansion of the number of participants at the FIFA World Cup. After seven tournaments featuring 32 national teams, the World Cup will for the first time include 48 teams. This was reported by euro-football.ru.reports.

According to Ponomaryov, FIFA aimed to increase the number of matches and generate more revenue with this decision, but the outcome could be the opposite. He stressed that allowing weaker teams in would reduce interest in the tournament.

Ponomaryov, who previously played for CSKA and the USSR national team, also doubted that lower-ranked teams would be able to achieve any notable results at the World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada in June–July.
