A sensational event occurred in American football. MLS management has imposed one of the harshest penalties on two players - Derrick Jones and Jav Yeboah. The league officially suspended them for life. The MLS itself made an official statement, and Reuters and ESPN later confirmed the news.
According to the league's press service, the investigation revealed that both players actively bet on football matches in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, including matches involving their teams. The MLS also noted that they were engaged in a wide-ranging gambling activity related to football.
One of the most acute cases was related to the meeting on October 19, 2024. According to the official statement, both players bet on a yellow card for Derrick Jones before the match, and this incident occurred during the match. The MLS also concluded that the players may have shared confidential information with other bettors.
At the time, Jones and Eboa were playing for Columbus Crew. Their careers continued in different ways: 29-year-old Derrick Jones is currently a free agent, while 28-year-old Yav Yeboa joined Chinese club Qingdao Haiju.
During his career, he played for Philadelphia Union, Nashville, Houston, Charlotte, and Columbus Crew. Yeboa, in addition to Columbus Crew, also represented Los Angeles in the MLS.
Yeboah's name is well-known to MLS fans, especially with the 2023 championship season. He won the MLS championship with Columbus Crew that same year and scored the decisive goal in the final against Los Angeles. Therefore, today's decision sounded like an even stronger blow to the football community.
In short, the MLS has shown one thing very clearly through this decision: the league does not intend to show any leniency in matters of fair play. For Jones and Yeboa, this was the most difficult turning point in their football careers. Players once mentioned with championships, important goals, and high hopes will now be remembered as a black page in MLS history.
