Fabio Cannavaro, the head coach of the Uzbekistan national team, spoke in detail about his arrival at the team and the main factors behind this decision in an interview with the "Prime Video Sport IT" channel.
According to the experienced specialist, certain changes had occurred in the national team before he joined. In particular, the previous head coach Srečko Katanec left his post due to health problems. At that time, a local coach temporarily took over the team and achieved successful results during the qualifying stage.
"Katanec was working with the team previously. However, he stepped aside due to health reasons before the final matches. Then a local coach continued the work, and the team successfully passed the qualifiers. After that, the federation decided to offer the position to a foreign specialist," Cannavaro explained.
The Italian coach also recalled visiting Uzbekistan long before receiving the official offer. He mentioned coming to the country as part of a "legends match," where he became acquainted with the local football environment, infrastructure, and atmosphere.
"I had previously come to participate in a 'legends match.' Through this, I felt the environment a bit. There, I met the vice-president of the federation—he was a former international referee. We communicated, and then a few weeks later, he called me and proposed a meeting. I accepted this offer without any hesitation," the coach said.
Cannavaro also specifically emphasized that financial aspects were not as important in making this decision. According to him, the main factor was the sporting goal and the dream of reaching the World Cup.
"I didn't talk to him about money or other conditions at all. For me, the most important thing is the opportunity to reach the World Cup. Feeling this and going through this path is already a great achievement," Cannavaro concluded.
