Instagram has initiated a major purge targeting bots, fake accounts, and inactive users. Starting May 6, users worldwide noticed a sharp decline in follower counts, affecting not only casual bloggers but also global celebrities.
This process has been dubbed the 'Great Purge of 2026' by social media users. Reports indicate that the platform deleted millions of inactive accounts within hours, leading to a significant drop in audience size for many profiles.
Among those affected is football star Cristiano Ronaldo, who lost 8 million followers as a result of the purge. This move is aimed at increasing the authenticity and engagement of Instagram's user base.
