Flick blocks Bastoni transfer, Barcelona looks for other candidates

The move of Inter defender and Italian champion Alessandro Bastoni to Barcelona will not happen. Although the Catalans negotiated this transfer for a long time, it is reported that head coach Hansi Flick did not approve the player's candidacy in the end.
Sport.es citing journalist Matteo Moretto, reports that Barcelona seriously considered the Bastoni option. Information had even circulated in the Spanish press that the Italian defender's transfer could be valued at around 50–60 million euros.
However, Hansi Flick's opinion was decisive in the final decision. According to the source, the German specialist doubts whether some of Bastoni's technical characteristics fully fit Barcelona's playing style, which is based on high intensity and strong pressing.
Flick wants to see defenders in the Barcelona backline who are not only good with the ball but also make quick decisions, play calmly under high pressure, and can cover large spaces. Although Bastoni has proven himself at a high level at Inter, the Catalan coach is not convinced that he would fully adapt to his specific system.
Alessandro Bastoni is considered one of the strongest central defenders in Italian football. He has won the league title with Inter and stands out for his defensive reliability, ability to bring the ball out, and precise left-footed passing. That is why his name being linked to Barcelona was not a coincidence.
But the current project at Barcelona is based on different requirements. Flick wants to build the team on a model of high tempo, active pressing, and rapid transitions to attack. In such a system, defenders are required not just to hold their position, but to show speed, aggression, and error-free play under pressure.
For this reason, the club's sporting director Deco has now started exploring other options. It is clear that Barcelona plans to strengthen its defensive line in the summer transfer window, but Bastoni is no longer considered a primary candidate.
Previously, Matteo Moretto reported that Hansi Flick was evaluating Bastoni's qualities. This means the option was seriously analyzed before being completely rejected. But in the end, it seems the coach's tactical vision decided the fate of the transfer.
In short, Alessandro Bastoni's move to Barcelona did not materialize. Hansi Flick doubted that the Italian defender would fully fit his high-intensity game model. Now Deco will look for other candidates. The transfer market in Catalonia is heating up — Flick needs a player who fits his system, not just a big name.
