Belgium reaches 2026 World Cup quarter-finals, but Rudi Garcia departs

Despite reaching the top eight at the 2026 World Cup, the Belgium national team has parted ways with head coach Rudi Garcia. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) decided not to extend the 62-year-old's contract, which expires on July 31.

The French coach also confirmed that a mutual decision was reached not to continue the partnership following discussions with the RBFA.

Garcia led Belgium to the World Cup quarter-finals

Rudi Garcia took charge of the Belgium national team on February 1, 2025, succeeding Domenico Tedesco.

He was tasked with rejuvenating the squad, initiating a generational transition, and maintaining Belgium's high standing in world football.

Under Garcia's leadership, the Belgians reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The team exited the tournament at this stage after a 1-2 defeat to eventual champions Spain.

Why was the contract not extended?

The official statement from the RBFA and the coach did not disclose specific reasons for the decision. It was only stated that the parties agreed not to continue their cooperation after discussions.

Garcia did not view the result as a failure. On the contrary, he emphasized that he is leaving the team in the top division of the UEFA Nations League and among the world's top eight national teams.

“After discussions with the RBFA, we decided not to continue the incredible journey we have been on for the last 18 months. I am leaving Belgium in League A of the UEFA Nations League and among the world's top eight teams,” the coach said.

Gratitude to players and fans

In his farewell statement, Rudi Garcia addressed his coaching staff, the players, and the national team fans.

“I would like to thank the incredible group of players we worked with, sporting director Vincent Mannaert, and the fans who supported us throughout the World Cup.”

The French coach expressed hope that the generational transition started in Belgian football would continue to be successful.

“I wish Belgium good luck in successfully continuing the generational transition. I am proud to have contributed to starting this process.”

Who will lead Belgium now?

Following Rudi Garcia's departure, the Belgian Football Association will begin searching for a new head coach. It is not yet known who will be appointed as his successor.

The new specialist will be tasked with continuing the squad renewal process started by Garcia, integrating young players, and keeping Belgium at a level where they can compete for trophies in major tournaments.

Rudi Garcia could not lead Belgium to a title, but he did guide the team into the top eight of the 2026 World Cup. Nevertheless, both parties decided to start a new chapter separately.
