The US startup Nucleus has recently attracted the attention of the entire society. The company has launched a new service called “Embryo”. This platform allows parents planning to have a child through the IVF process to choose the most genetically suitable embryo.
Such a choice is not only related to health. The service takes into account more than 1,000 parameters, such as the child’s future appearance, height, eye and hair color, even intellectual abilities and predisposition to personal traits. Through this, parents try to reduce the susceptibility of the future generation to hereditary diseases, mental conditions, diabetes or oncology.
What is noteworthy is that this technology does not edit any genes. That is, it does not make changes to the DNA, but rather performs an analytical selection among existing embryos. The platform compares different embryos and recommends the options that are likely to give the best result.
The price of the “Embryo” service is set at $ 6,000. Company officials emphasize that there is no guarantee of a successful outcome — the technology only increases the chances. In a typical IVF cycle, three to six embryos are usually transferred, and the selection is made from that group.
Undoubtedly, this service has caused controversy in the general public. Some experts note that such an approach may have ethical implications, while others support informed choice for the health of future generations.
Nucleus representatives emphasize that they do not engage in genetic engineering and that the entire process is carried out within the framework of current US legislation. This, in their opinion, allows us to consider the service safe and ethically acceptable.
