"Bulletproof" Wood
US-based company InventWood has developed a modified wood called Superwood, which is significantly stronger than regular wood. In lab tests, Superwood was several times stronger than natural planks — it even withstood a bullet fired at it in a controlled environment.

Strengthening Wood to Metal Levels
Co-founder Alex Lau explains that lignin, a polymer in wood, is chemically removed and the material is compressed by 80%, forming strong hydrogen bonds. As a result, the product becomes thinner, stronger, and more durable.

Environmental Advantage
Concrete and steel release a large amount of carbon in construction, while wood stores it. In this sense, Superwood is considered an environmentally beneficial material.

Superwood’s Applications
Superwood can't compete with structural materials, but it is suitable for strong outer cladding, interior design elements, or military use. The company currently uses poplar wood and plans to use bamboo in the future.

Safety and Testing
Lau says Superwood has passed fire resistance and insect durability tests. However, British scientists are awaiting more data on its performance in varying wet and dry climates.
