AI Neural Network's Advice Lands Pensioner in Psychiatric Hospital

In the United States, a 60-year-old man sought dietary advice from artificial intelligence and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. This was reported by researchers from the University of Washington, who published their findings in the Annals of Internal Medicine journal.

According to the data, the pensioner, who had no prior psychiatric history, went to the emergency department suspecting that his neighbor was poisoning him. He told doctors that he drank only distilled water at home and followed a complex salt-free diet. Due to paranoia, he also refused to drink even the water offered to him.

Researchers stated that this diet was recommended by artificial intelligence — a neural network. It advised the pensioner that sodium chloride (salt) could be replaced with bromide.

Scientists believe he most likely asked ChatGPT 3.5 or ChatGPT 4.0 how to remove chloride from his diet. However, bromide accumulates in the body and can lead to bromism — chronic poisoning with bromine compounds, causing skin rashes, lethargy, memory impairment, and other neurological problems.
