Apple to allow selection of AI models in iOS 27

Apple plans to offer users the ability to choose between different artificial intelligence models on their devices in the iOS 27 operating system. According to Bloomberg, iPhone owners will be able to use third-party Large Language Models (LLMs) to manage system functions. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
This new feature, internally codenamed "Extensions," will allow users to leverage generative AI capabilities in installed apps through Apple Intelligence features like Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. This functionality will also be available in iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
Currently, Apple is testing models from Google and Anthropic. ChatGPT is also expected to remain among the options. The company is focusing its AI strategy on transforming existing hardware into an AI-centric experience rather than investing heavily in infrastructure.
Amid leadership changes at Apple, particularly the potential new role for John Ternus, the company's future AI direction is being defined. Although Apple is perceived as moving slower in AI compared to competitors, it aims to create a convenient and flexible ecosystem for its users.
