Delta Air Lines failed to reach an agreement with SpaceX regarding the implementation of in-flight internet services. The main conflict between the parties arose over how passengers connect to the network. Delta demanded access through its Delta Sync portal, while SpaceX opposed this. Elon Musk emphasized that the Starlink system should work like home internet, without any additional logins or pages. According to him, such portals degrade the user experience and unnecessarily complicate the system. As a result, Delta abandoned the partnership and chose Amazon's Project Kuiper.
According to the plan, the Amazon Leo system will be installed on about 500 aircraft by 2028. For Delta, Wi-Fi is not just a service, but a tool to keep customers within its brand ecosystem. SpaceX, however, is prioritizing ease of use by rejecting such monetization methods.
This decision highlights two opposing approaches in the aviation internet market. On one side are the closed digital ecosystems of airlines, and on the other are technological solutions that provide transparent, barrier-free connectivity.
