Robot wolves deployed in Japan to protect against bears

In the villages of Japan's Hokkaido island, unusual "guardians" have appeared: mechanical wolves with red eyes, artificial fur, and terrifying sounds. Developed by Ohta Seiki, the Monster Wolf robots were initially created to protect agricultural land, but demand has surged due to the critical situation with bears in the country. This is reported by Ixbt.com news.

The robot detects movement using infrared sensors and can emit over 50 different sounds, including wolf howls or human voices, audible up to one kilometer away. In 2026, the number of orders exceeded 50, which is well above production capacity. According to the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, 13 people have died and over 230 have been injured in bear attacks this year.

Monster Wolf units are also being installed near airports, schools, and supermarkets. Ohta Seiki is now working on wheeled robots that patrol areas and AI cameras that identify animal species to select appropriate sounds.

This technology is a prime example of "physical AI," combining robotics, sensors, and machine analysis algorithms. While large Japanese companies work on humanoid robots, the country is effectively using AI to solve real-world problems involving wildlife.
