US President Donald Trump has delayed signing an executive order that would mandate safety testing for artificial intelligence (AI) models before their public release. The President expressed concern that certain provisions in the document could hinder US technological leadership. In a conversation with the White House press office, Trump noted: "I didn't like some aspects of this document... We are ahead of China and others, and I don't want to do anything that hurts that leadership." This is reported by Ixbt.com reports.
According to reports, the delay was caused not only by substantive objections but also by organizational issues. Specifically, many heads of major technology companies were unable to reach Washington on short notice. Since the signing ceremony was traditionally intended to include a photo session with industry leaders, the event schedule became a significant factor in postponing the decision.
The expected executive order would task the US Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) and other federal agencies with developing a framework to assess the safety of AI models before they hit the market. This initiative is seen as a response to concerns regarding the emergence of powerful systems capable of identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities.
According to CNN, one of the most controversial provisions of the document was the requirement for companies to submit new models to government agencies between 14 and 90 days before release. This standard implies increased government oversight during the development and testing phases of AI systems. Sources within the administration are concerned that such requirements could become a "bottleneck" that slows down the pace of innovation.
Amid the global AI race between the US and China, the issue of regulation has become extremely sensitive. While cybersecurity experts warn about the risks of next-generation models, the tech industry is demanding the minimization of bureaucratic restrictions. Although the document has been postponed for now, debates over government oversight of AI are expected to continue.
