Replacing Intel, AMD and NVIDIA: China approves its list of AI chips

The Chinese government has officially approved nine domestic artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators for use in state structures and large state-owned companies. Officials have formed a special list of "permitted" chips to gradually phase out Western technologies and reduce dependence on American companies like NVIDIA. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
Products developed by China's largest IT giants, such as Huawei and Alibaba, have successfully passed the certification process. The list includes Huawei Ascend 310 and Ascend 910, as well as Alibaba's T-Head Zhenwu M530 and M890 solutions. Additionally, developments from Biren Technology, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX, and Moore Threads have also received approval for use.
The new certification system is part of a state program to transition China's strategically important IT systems to its own hardware and software. These chips will now be prioritized in public procurement, data centers, and AI-related projects. Interestingly, major players like Cambricon and Kunlunxin are not yet on the list.
Chinese manufacturers are rapidly replacing NVIDIA in the domestic market. By the end of 2025, local companies supplied 1.65 million AI accelerators, capturing 41% of the Chinese server market. Huawei alone managed to sell over 800,000 chips. However, production capacity remains a key challenge, as almost all manufacturers are dependent on SMIC factories.
