Cognition CEO: AI agents should not replace software engineers

Scott Wu, founder and CEO of the startup Cognition, recently returned to the spotlight after his two-year-old company raised $1 billion at a $26 billion valuation. Cognition is the creator of Devin, one of the world's first and most successful AI software engineers. According to Wu, Devin can perform tasks independently from start to finish, ushering in a new era in software development. This is reported by Techcrunch.com .

Many are wondering if Devin will replace mid-level (L4) software engineers. In an interview with TechCrunch, Scott Wu gave both a positive and negative answer to this question. "We never thought about replacing humans. Although many are predicting such scenarios, our vision is completely different," he emphasized.

At a time when jobs are being cut in the tech world due to artificial intelligence, Wu stated that he does not want developers to be unemployed. He has been coding since he was nine and won numerous math and programming competitions as a child. Wu even grew up in the same circle as other famous wunderkinds like Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang.

In Wu's view, Devin is not a replacement for a developer, but their closest assistant. He pointed to a plush toy holding a computer on his desk, calling it a symbol of Devin. "It's a friend that helps you create more things," he says.

In conclusion, Scott Wu said that artificial intelligence should not take away the joy of the programming process. According to him, developers love creating things from scratch and turning their ideas into products. Agents like Devin only simplify complex technical processes, serving as a convenient layer between the human and the final product.
