The next issue of the “Weather and Agriculture” column analyzes the weather conditions in June and their impact on agriculture. Forecasters predict that cooler days will prevail in Uzbekistan in June.
- As you noted earlier, a cool weather background was observed in the republic in late May and early June. Tell me, how did such an environment affect agriculture?
Erkin Abdulakhatov: Indeed, the previous sectoral forecast came true, and at the beginning of summer the population felt a noticeable cooling of the weather. This was positive for the development of agricultural products - plants were protected from various stresses. The coolness in late spring and early summer occurred as a result of the exchange of various air currents, but strong winds were also observed in this process. They caused wheat to lie down in some places and fruits to fall in horticulture. However, this damage is not significant. At the end of May, severe hailstorms were observed in the Altiyarik district of the Fergana region, which caused serious damage to gardeners - 30-70 percent of the crop was lost.
- What will the weather be like in the next ten days and throughout the month as a whole? What conditions should farmers be prepared for when planting and cultivating second crops on land freed from grain?
Erkin Abdulakhatov: With the exception of a few days of heat in mid-June, the second half of the month is expected to be relatively cooler. Short-term heat is likely to be followed by cool winds. This situation resembles a “carousel”: one heat, one cool - a typical June picture. In terms of precipitation, the situation is better in the northern regions, but this does not mean “relying on the rain and planting seeds”.
The main factor for the development of second crops this month is water sources. Water storage in reservoirs and flow in rivers play a decisive role in this process. An important factor for the mood of peasants and farmers is the normal temperature in the first month of summer.
From the beginning of next week, a heat wave of +40 degrees is entering our region through Turkmenistan. This wave will cover the North, South, Bukhara and Navoi regions on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, it is expected to spread to the regions of the republic outside the valley. Cool weather will return from Friday.
- What weather is expected in the hottest months of summer - July and August?
Erkin Abdulakhatov: According to the World Meteorological Organization, Uzhydromet and Climate Centers, in July, the temperature is expected to be 1 degree above normal in many regions of Uzbekistan, and 1-2 degrees in valleys and mountainous areas. August will be similar. However, the situation in terms of precipitation is different - there may be very little precipitation, even extreme drought. The situation is relatively better in the north. However, it should be remembered that summer precipitation does not have a significant impact on the development of agricultural production - they only serve to suppress dust and slightly cool the air.
