UN: Deaths of aid workers reached record high during Gaza war

According to the UN, 383 aid workers were killed worldwide last year. This is the highest figure since 1997, with nearly half of the victims in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, described such attacks as “a shameful indictment of international inaction and indifference.”

The report noted that in 2025, 36 aid workers were killed in Sudan and 3 in Ukraine. In March, 15 emergency and aid workers were killed in Gaza by Israeli fire, an incident that sparked international outrage.

Israel’s army said in April that these incidents were the result of a “breach of orders” and announced that one commander would be dismissed due to several “professional failures.”

UN officials called the situation “tragic.” They stressed that attacks on aid workers are not decreasing but rather increasing, and that the indifference of the international community is a cause for serious concern.
