On September 17, in Geneva, the Head of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan, Saida Mirziyoyeva, held a meeting with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Mirziyoyeva reported this on her personal social media page.
During the conversation, the ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan, the prospects of joining the WTO, as well as potential difficulties that may arise in the process were discussed. Saida Mirziyoyeva, while exchanging views, emphasized that Uzbekistan is committed to faithfully fulfilling its obligations within the international trade system.
She also expressed sincere gratitude to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for her strong leadership and constant support. The negotiations particularly highlighted the importance of trust and cooperation in global trade processes.
It should be noted that this was not the first meeting between the two leaders. In June 2023, in Tashkent, within the framework of the conference “Economic Reforms in Uzbekistan and the Accession Process to the WTO,” they also held a face-to-face discussion. In addition, in September of the same year, Saida Mirziyoyeva visited Geneva and met with the head of the WTO there.
As a reminder, on May 14 of this year, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting dedicated to the process of Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization and the measures to accelerate it. At the meeting, the Head of State gave specific instructions on expediting this process and ensuring its systematic and high-quality organization.
According to experts, Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO could open new markets for the country, increase competitiveness, and give a significant boost to the global integration of the national economy.
