Mysterious inversion causes severe deterioration of air quality in the capital

The sharp deterioration of air quality over the capital’s sky may continue for several days, Uzgidromet reported. According to the agency’s measurements taken on November 16 at 20:00, the amount of fine particles in the environment has significantly exceeded the norm.

According to the information, the PM10 indicator reached 373 µg/m³, which is almost one and a half times higher than the established limit. The amount of PM2.5 was 202 µg/m³ — this exceeds the permitted level by more than three times.

Officials stated that the inversion process caused such a sharp change in the air. The sudden change of temperature leads to the locking of air layers onto each other, preventing fine particles from descending to the ground surface and causing them to accumulate in the atmosphere.

The agency announced that the situation will remain for several days and called on the population to take precautionary measures. According to them, it is advisable to avoid long outdoor activities and use protective masks if needed.

— “Such a state of the air environment is felt from northern territories to central regions. Citizens should walk less and use protective means to preserve their health,” the statement said.
