Currently, there is no threat of a Russian attack on Denmark. However, the likelihood of such a threat will increase in the coming years. These conclusions are contained in the "Forecast 2024" report, published by the intelligence service of the Scandinavian kingdom on February 9. International media, including the online publication Politico, drew attention to this document on Tuesday, February 11.

According to the authors of the report, since 2022, Russia has been conducting large-scale reconstruction and reform of the country's armed forces against the backdrop of military operations in Ukraine. However, during 2024, these efforts changed their nature: “from reconstruction to the rapid development of military capabilities in order to have the ability to fight on equal terms with NATO forces.”

Financial and material assistance from China, as well as support from North Korea and Iran with troops and weapons systems, are increasingly helping Russia to free up resources, the Danish intelligence agency believes.

This does not mean that Russia has made a decision to go to war against NATO, the report says. However, Russia is arming itself and increasing its potential “to make such a decision.”

“For now, Russia wants to continue to avoid actions that would affect Article 5 of the NATO Treaty. However, if the relative balance of power does not change in Russia’s favor, Russia’s appetite for NATO may increase,” the report says. Such a shift in the balance of power, according to the report's authors, will occur if Russia increases its military capabilities and the West does not.
