Lavrov: The period of 500-year domination of the West is over
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivered a speech at the G20 Foreign Ministers' Council in Johannesburg.
"Historical experience shows that no state can overcome common challenges and threats alone. The weakening of one link in the global chain condemns all of humanity to severe trials. Western sanctions against Russia, terrorism in the Nord Stream pipeline, and, first of all, the EU's competitive potential are a vivid example of this," Lavrov said.

"However, the modern world is undergoing fundamental changes and is becoming truly multipolar. The five-hundred-year dominance of the West has irrevocably disappeared. They must find the strength to accept this objective truth," Lavrov said.

For example, in 2022, the BRICS confidently overtook the G7 in terms of gross domestic product. Today, their share in the world economy is 37% to 29%.

Secondly, the economic growth rate in developing countries is twice as fast as in Western countries - more than 4%. In the West - less than 2%.

Thirdly, developing countries are becoming generators of advanced ideas and development, including in the field of artificial intelligence.

The West is against multipolarity

Neoliberal circles in the West view the emergence of a multipolar world not as an opportunity, but as a challenge. They are trying unsuccessfully to inflict a "strategic defeat" on their opponents by betting senselessly on the confrontation.

Neocolonial practices are being used: cheaply extracting natural resources from developing countries and imposing pseudo-ecological taxes on their products, trying to stop cooperation between Africa, Asia and Latin America with China and Russia, and trying to stop industrialization in the countries of the South.

For example, if the extraction of rare metals can bring developing countries a meager $ 11 billion a year, the West makes $ 400 billion from them by producing batteries.

The global financial system also serves the West. Last year, at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, the world announced military spending - it became known that $ 2.4 trillion in aid was allocated to Ukraine at the expense of the theft of sovereign assets and cuts in international development assistance.

BRICS and G20 remain useful platforms

In such conditions, BRICS and G20 still retain their status as useful platforms for connecting the interests of countries with different strategies and levels of development.

In 2024, we agreed: the “Global South” should exercise a real influence commensurate with its weight in the activities of multilateral institutions, in particular the IMF and the World Bank, and ensure that its needs are taken into account in the WTO. Now the agreements must be implemented, and Russia will do everything to make this happen.

It is important for developing countries to independently manage their natural resources, receive fair prices for them, and ensure equal and direct access to markets, supply chains, technologies, and investments, Lavrov concluded.
