Only a Trump-Putin meeting can open the way to peace in Ukraine — Important statement from the US Secretary of State
The only opportunity to peacefully resolve the conflict in Ukraine lies in a direct meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Fox News on Friday, May 16.

Marco Rubio emphasized that until these two politicians meet face-to-face, peace negotiations on Ukraine will not move forward, and the situation will remain unchanged. "I don't exactly know when or where this meeting could happen, but the political and diplomatic efforts of the past few months clearly indicate that no results can be expected until President Trump sits down at the negotiating table with Vladimir Putin," Rubio said.

As previously reported, Vladimir Putin declined to personally participate in direct negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Istanbul. Instead, the Russian delegation in Turkey is headed by Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to the Russian president.

Commenting on this development, Donald Trump also said that without this bilateral meeting, it is impossible to ease tensions and start a peace process in Ukraine. According to the former US president, Putin's refusal to personally travel to Istanbul was partially influenced by his own decision. "I think Putin intended to go, but assumed that I would be there as well. After learning that I was not planning a trip to Turkey, he also decided not to participate personally," Trump explained to reporters aboard his plane flying from Qatar to the UAE.

At the same time, Trump emphasized that this meeting should take place as soon as possible. He stated that further delays in negotiations would lead to the loss of even more lives in Ukraine. When asked if he was disappointed by the Russian president's absence at the talks in Turkey, Trump replied: "I wasn't disappointed at all." He also noted that he does not have sufficient information about the composition of the Russian delegation sent to Turkey.

Previously, Trump indicated the possibility of interrupting his current Middle East trip to travel to Turkey if both leaders decided to personally attend the negotiations in Istanbul.

The Zamin.uz editorial team is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates on any new developments. Is a personal meeting between Trump and Putin indeed the only solution for achieving peace in Ukraine? What do you think?
