Recently, at a meeting of the UN Security Council, Miroslav Jenča, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, announced that at least 524 billion dollars will be needed to restore the infrastructure in Ukraine destroyed as a result of the war, dppa.un.org reported. This amount will be required to eliminate all damage over the next 10 years.
In his speech, Miroslav Jenča strongly condemned the strikes by Russia on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and especially emphasized that the scale of damage from such attacks is increasing day by day.
According to sources, since Russia invaded Ukrainian territory on February 24, 2022, 13,580 civilians in Ukraine, including 716 children, have died as a result of military actions.
In Jenča’s opinion, the humanitarian situation in Ukraine is also getting worse every day. In the first half of this year, the number of civilian casualties increased by 50 percent compared to the same period last year. It is noted that in some regions, attacks using long-range missiles and drones have increased, and the population is facing serious problems in terms of food, clean water, electricity, and medical services.
According to available information, 3.7 million Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes and move to other parts of the country. Another 6 million Ukrainians are living abroad as refugees.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General asked the Security Council members to pay special attention to protecting the civilian population and civil infrastructure in Ukraine, expanding humanitarian assistance, and strengthening humanitarian operations.
It was noted that in recent weeks Russia and Ukraine have been holding diplomatic negotiations in Istanbul. Miroslav Jenča emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement to end the war as a result of these talks.
It should be noted that various figures are given regarding the total damage caused to Ukraine by Russia. Two weeks ago, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Moscow needs to pay approximately 500 billion euros in compensation for the damage caused to Ukraine.
According to calculations by analysts from the British newspaper “The Times”, at least 400 billion pounds sterling, or about 532 billion dollars, will be needed to restore Ukraine’s infrastructure after the war.
