Trump imposes 25% extra tariff on India for buying Russian oil
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India for purchasing oil from Russia. With this, the total tariff on Indian imports to the US will reach up to 50% – one of the highest rates imposed by the US.

According to a White House statement, Russia’s military actions in Ukraine pose a threat to US national security and foreign policy, and decisive measures are being taken in response to this emergency. India's import and resale of Russian oil strengthens the Russian economy and helps prolong the war.

India called Trump’s decision “baseless and unfair.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that at the beginning of the conflict, the US itself had suggested India import Russian gas to help stabilize the global energy market. He noted that India was forced to import Russian oil because traditional suppliers had redirected their deliveries to Europe.

Despite being one of the US’s largest trading partners, India expressed dissatisfaction with such sanctions and announced it would take all necessary measures to safeguard its economic security.
