It has become known that local authorities in various major European cities have decided to introduce new restrictions, writes Azertadj.
According to the decree, from January 1, 2027, smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes in open terraces of cafes, bars, and restaurants will be completely prohibited. This restriction applies not only to regular cigarettes, but also to electronic cigarettes, vapes, and hookahs.
According to the new rules, the ban will also apply to smoking rooms operating in certain institutions, airports, or special cigar clubs. Thus, it is envisaged that public catering establishments and public places will be completely free from tobacco products.
The municipal decision was officially announced on Tuesday. This initiative is included in the package of measures developed on the basis of the recommendations of the European Commission. Restaurant and bar owners are given approximately one and a half years to adapt their activities.
According to the rules, starting from January 2027, smoking is prohibited even within 10 meters of restaurants, bars, or cafes. If, even after the ban enters into force, clients are provided with ashtrays, and the owners of the institution are fined, visitors who violate the rules will also be held liable.
The document also notes that local authorities must develop additional measures to restrict smoking during festivals, fairs, and public events.
However, the association of restaurateurs emphasizes that the new bans may have economic consequences. According to them, the restrictions will not reduce the number of smokers, but will force them to smoke on the street. This can create inconvenience for the population and complicate the control of the institution's employees.
Earlier, the European Commission proposed to introduce this ban in 2026, but the deadline was postponed by one year to allocate more time to preparatory work in the field.
