Maurice Hastings, who was unjustly imprisoned in the United States for 38 years, will receive $25 million in compensation from the state. This amount was recorded as the largest compensation in the state's history.
Hastings was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1983 on charges of raping and shooting Roberta Wiedermayer. But in 2021, the case was reviewed, and the results of the DNA analysis proved his innocence.
The investigation pointed to the real criminal - Kenneth Packnett, who was arrested in 1983 for a similar crime and died in prison in 2020.
Hestings, released, told reporters: "38 years of my life have been abducted. No money will return them, but this compensation means the end of a long, torturous journey."
