Former President of Congo sentenced to death

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a decision that sparked major political resonance has been made. The country’s military court found former President Joseph Kabila guilty of crimes against humanity, treason, and war crimes, sentencing him to death in absentia. This was reported by The Guardian.

Court documents state that Kabila supported the uprising that took place in February of this year and is also accused of murder, rape, torture, and organizing a rebellion. He did not personally attend the trial and had no appointed lawyer.

In addition to the sentence, the military court also imposed compensation. According to the ruling, Joseph Kabila must pay more than 50 billion dollars to the state and to the victims.

It should be recalled that Kabila served as President of the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2001 to 2019. He categorically denied the charges, calling the judicial system politicized. He currently resides mainly in South Africa. However, some sources report that in May he was seen in the city of Goma, which is under rebel control.

Kabila’s former political rival, current President Félix Tshisekedi, accuses him of financing the February uprising. The government has temporarily suspended Kabila’s party activities and has begun confiscating property connected to him.

According to observers, this decision could further escalate the already tense political situation in Congo. The issue of stability and security in the country remains pressing.
