In Kyrgyzstan, a number of politicians are promoting the idea of relocating the capital from Bishkek to the city of Manas. This was reported by the Chairman of the State Committee for National Security, Deputy Head of the Cabinet of Ministers Kamchybek Tashiev.
According to Tashiev, for claiming the status of capital, both the city and the population must be ready psychologically and in terms of infrastructure. “Being a capital is not easy. Large funds are being directed to Manas, construction is proceeding at a rapid pace — we must turn it into a modern city,” he said on October 11 at a meeting with school principals in Manas.
According to official information, Manas will obtain the status of the third city of republican significance in 2026. Tashiev also noted that changing the city’s name was a correct step strategically.
As a reminder, on September 17 the city of Jalolobod was officially renamed Manas — the corresponding law was signed by President Sadyr Japarov. Manas is Kyrgyzstan’s third largest city and the administrative center of Jalolobod Region. Its population is about 184.4 thousand people and it is located in the south of the country, in the Fergana Valley.
