Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, rejected US President Donald Trump's proposal to resume negotiations with Iran, Reuters reports.com.
In his speech, Khamenei emphasized that Trump's statement - that is, the claims that the US has destroyed Iran's nuclear potential - does not correspond to reality. According to him, if negotiations are conducted with coercion and threats, this is not a deal, but a means of pressure.
"Trump calls himself a master of deals. But if the deal is made with threat and pressure, it is not a real deal at all. This is only coercion and intimidation," the Iranian leader said.
Khomeini also laughed at Trump's statement about the destruction of Iran's nuclear industry. He emphasized that the US president can only "continue to dream" of this, as Iran's scientific and technological capacity remains intact.
For reference, Tehran and Washington have previously held five indirect negotiations on the nuclear program. However, they were abruptly halted in June after Israel and the US struck Iranian nuclear facilities and ended in a 12-day air battle.
Last week, speaking in the Israeli parliament, Trump said that after a truce with Hamas in Gaza, the US could conclude a "peace agreement" with Iran. However, Western countries continue to accuse Iran of secretly producing nuclear weapons. Tehran denies these claims, arguing that uranium enrichment is exclusively for the purposes of civil energy.
At the end of September, the UN announced the reintroduction of sanctions against Iran. According to calculations by Great Britain, Germany, and France, Tehran violated the terms of the uranium enrichment agreement concluded 10 years ago.
Thus, Khamenei's latest statement practically eliminated the possibility of a softening of relations between Iran and the US in the near future. Iranian officials interpret this position as a necessary measure to protect the country's independence and national security.
