Human-like logical thinking was discovered in chimpanzees

Scientists from the Universities of California and Utrecht have proven that chimpanzees possess human-like logical thinking abilities. The research results were published in the journal "Science."

According to the data, the experiment was conducted at the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda. The chimpanzees were shown two boxes, in one of which food was hidden. Initially, the monkeys were given a signal indicating which box contained food. Later, they were shown another, more reliable sign, which meant a different box.

As a result, chimpanzees changed their choices when stronger evidence emerged. As researcher Emily Sanford notes, "such flexible thinking is usually observed in four-year-old children. It's truly amazing to see this ability in chimpanzees too."

Scientists used strictly controlled experiments and computer modeling methods to prove that this behavior is not a result of instinct, but a product of logical thinking. The result showed that the decision-making process of chimpanzees was based on evidence.

This discovery rejected the traditional view that "only humans can think rationally." Scientists believe that studying chimpanzees' ability to reconsider thoughts could give impetus to new scientific directions in child development, neuropsychology, and artificial intelligence.
