Will Kazakhstan join the Abraham Accords?


Kazakhstan is expected to announce its intention to join the Abraham Accords. This could be an important diplomatic step for Central Asia and the Middle East.

According to sources in the American administration, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will likely make this statement during his visit to Washington, within the framework of the "Central Asia - US" summit. Axios reports that the announcement may be made during Tokayev's meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Despite Kazakhstan's diplomatic relations with Israel lasting more than thirty years, this move is being viewed as a symbolic step that could give fresh impetus to the Abraham Accords. It is noted in Washington that Kazakhstan's participation demonstrates the appeal of this format and may contribute to restoring Israel's status in the Muslim world.

During the visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Kazakhstan and the US to establish cooperation in the critically important field of minerals. Analysts believe this is a step aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership.

The Abraham Accords, launched in 2020, initially included the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. This was considered a significant foreign policy project of the then US President Donald Trump's administration.

The White House hopes that Kazakhstan's decision will encourage other countries like Saudi Arabia to join the accords as well. The expected visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the US is seen as an opportunity to promote this idea.

Kazakhstan is the world's largest uranium producer, supplying about 40 percent of this strategic resource. The country also meets nearly 25 percent of the US's domestic uranium demand.
