Chinese researchers identified the main reason for the decrease in the possibility of pregnancy in women with age and demonstrated a new therapy aimed at its elimination. Xinhua news agency reported this.
The research was conducted by specialists led by Nankai University, and its results were published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine. According to scientist Li Tze, it has been determined that a factor previously overlooked - ribosomal dysfunction - plays a decisive role in the deterioration of egg quality.
According to the data, overactivity of the ribosomal gene begins around the age of 35. This leads to disruption of normal protein synthesis, errors in chromosome separation, and, consequently, delayed embryonic development.
To stabilize this process, scientists tested rapamycin, a drug that slows down ribosomal translation. Short-term therapy reduced ribosomal activity, restored protein balance, and improved egg quality.
Small clinical trials also yielded positive results: several women obtained high-quality blastocysts after treatment, which increased the likelihood of successful pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby.
Wu Xuisin, a representative of the Shanxi Children's Hospital, assessed these results as a "hopeful step" and emphasized that this method could open a new era in understanding and treating age-related infertility. However, more comprehensive clinical studies are required to confirm the full effectiveness of the drug.
