From a Catholic school in Niger State, 315 children were kidnapped, 50 of them escaped and returned to their families. The military and police are still searching for the remaining 265 children and 12 teachers.
Students and teachers were taken from St Mary’s School. Armed men broke into the school around 2:00 a.m. Some schools did not close dormitories despite warnings.
The Niger State government decided to temporarily close all schools. At the same time, measures to protect children and ensure school safety have been strengthened.
This incident reminds of previous kidnappings in northwest Nigeria. In 2014, 276 girls were taken from Chibok. The current situation shows that criminal groups remain a serious problem in the country.
