Living under Russian pressure: the realities of eastern Ukraine
Residents of Kostiantynivka live in damaged buildings as Russian troops approach and try to survive. 65-year-old Volodymyr spends his days under explosions during winter. “It’s scary, but we are living on,” he says. People rely on humanitarian aid for food and water and also collect rainwater.

Russian troops, approaching Pokrovsk, are targeting the remaining Ukrainian-controlled areas in Donetsk region. Fighting continues in the south of the city, with loud explosions and drones flying overhead. Soldiers are tasked with protecting Ukraine’s strategic cities.

Residents continue to live in ruined homes. 54-year-old Yuriy does not want to leave his home: “Where should I go? How?” he says. Despite the damage, at least it is his own home.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is trying to secure safety guarantees from allies. Ukrainian soldiers are ready to defend every place, considering every centimeter important for their homeland.
