The hijab issue is again at the center of discussion: Austria intends to introduce new restrictions

A new bill is being developed in Austria to ban girls under 14 from wearing hijabs in schools. According to Reuters and European Pravda, the ruling coalition plans to submit the document for parliamentary discussion in the coming days. If this restriction is implemented in practice, it will affect approximately 12,000 students.

Supporters of the initiative assess this measure as "protecting the freedom of girls." According to the leader of the Liberal Neos party, Jannik Shetty, an environment free from religious obligations should be created in the school. The far-right Freedom Party (FPP) considers the hijab ban a "first step" and supports its further expansion.

At the same time, this decision caused serious objections. The Austrian Islamic Religious Society called the ban contrary to constitutional rights and religious freedom. They recall that a similar ban imposed in 2020 on girls under 10 was lifted by the Constitutional Court as "discrimination against Muslims."
