European Union to provide Ukraine with 90 billion euros loan

European Union leaders on Friday decided to allocate 90 billion euros ($105 billion) to Ukraine to fund its defense. The decision comes amid disagreements over the use of frozen Russian assets.

The European Commission was authorized to continue working on a loan based on frozen Russian assets, but for now this option cannot be implemented, especially due to risks in Belgium, where most of the assets are held.

The loan will be provided to Ukraine under the EU budget guarantee. Russian assets, totaling 210 billion euros ($246 billion), will remain frozen until Moscow pays war damages to Ukraine.

The leaders emphasized that the decision shows EU unity in supporting Ukraine and countering the military threat from Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for using the frozen assets to fund defense.
