China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the US of misrepresenting its defense policy to block improved relations between China and India. The statement was made by ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on December 25.
Lin Jian responded to a question about whether China might use the recent easing of tensions with India over disputed borders to prevent closer US-India ties. He emphasized that China views its relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective.
The Chinese official said the border issue is only between China and India and that “we object to any country passing judgment on this matter.” The statement was a response to comments in a Pentagon report.
In its December 23 report, the Pentagon said China “likely seeks to use reduced tensions to stabilize bilateral relations and prevent the deepening of US-India ties.”
