Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he plans to meet with US President Donald Trump in person in the near future. According to the head of state, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov reported on the results of the next contacts with the American side.
Zelensky wrote on his social media page that an agreement had been reached on a meeting at the highest level - with President Trump - in the coming days. In his opinion, concrete decisions on many important issues can be made by the new year. The exact date of the meeting has not yet been announced.
According to the Kyiv Post, citing diplomatic sources, Zelensky may visit Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. According to the sources, if all organizational issues are in order, the meeting is likely to take place on December 28. This date and place were also mentioned by Axios journalist Barack Ravid.
It is worth recalling that a day earlier, Zelensky announced that he had a "very productive conversation" with Trump's negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to him, these conversations revealed a number of practical ideas that could lead to a long-term peace.
Fourth visit: Will relations be restored?
This will be Zelensky's fourth visit to the United States to meet with Trump. The first meeting was held in the Oval Office in February 2025 and ended in heated arguments. The next two meetings were held in a relatively calm and constructive atmosphere.
Meanwhile, on the eve of the Zelensky-Trump dialogue, a number of complex issues regarding the peace plan remain open. One of the most controversial points is the management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Ukraine offers to manage this facility in equal shares with the United States, while Washington is considering options that include Russian participation in it.
Peace plan and the issue of territories
Two approaches to ending the war may clash at the meeting:
- Zelensky's position: Withdraw troops from the front line and create a free economic zone or demilitarized zone there.
- Putin's demand: not to abandon the principle of "Donbass is Russia" and exchange certain territories.
