The Syrian government has deployed soldiers to guard a mass grave in the Dhumair desert. The grave was used to store thousands of bodies hidden during Assad’s rule. The government has opened a criminal investigation.
The grave was previously a military depot and was vacated in 2018. Until then, bodies from another grave near Qutayfa were moved to Dhumair. This process was called “Operation Move Earth.”
Police have started an investigation, witnesses have been interviewed, and land surveys carried out. Access to the site now requires permission from the Defense Ministry. The Dhumair military facility is back in operation and guarded.
The Syrian National Commission for Missing Persons is preparing for exhumation of mass graves. Excavations at Dhumair and other sites are scheduled for 2027. The case has been sent to investigators, and suspects from Assad’s era are being identified.
