Images of former President Bashar al-Assad and his family will be removed from Syrian banknotes. This was reported by the SANA news agency.
It was reported that Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara'a presented the design of the new banknotes. They will replace old banknotes depicting Bashar al-Assad and his family, who were overthrown in December 2024.
Previously, a 2,000-pound Syrian banknote featured a portrait of Bashar al-Assad, while a 1,000-pound banknote featured a portrait of his father, Hafiz al-Assad.
According to AFP, new banknotes ranging from £10 to £500 will be issued starting January 1st. The new coins will depict not political figures, but national symbols - Damascus rose, wheat ears, olives, oranges, and others.
According to officials, this decision is perceived as the beginning of a new political stage in the country, as well as a symbol of national unity and renewal.
