The US administration is discussing new initiatives regarding Greenland. According to Reuters, the White House is considering one-time payments to Greenlanders to persuade them to secede from Denmark and potentially align with the US in the future. Proposed amounts could range from $10,000 to $100,000 per person.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, and Danish and Greenlandic authorities insist the island is not for sale. Leading European countries also support Denmark’s position, stating that Greenland’s future should be decided only by Greenland and Denmark. This issue is also causing tensions among NATO allies.
US President Donald Trump considers Greenland an important territory in terms of national security and strategic resources. White House officials said various ways to link Greenland with the US are being discussed, including diplomatic agreements and special partnership deals. Official negotiations with Denmark are also planned.
The issue of Greenlandic independence has been discussed for many years. Most of the population supports separation from Denmark, but due to economic and social concerns, a referendum has not yet been held. Surveys show that most Greenlanders do not support joining the US.
