Finland officially ends the era of home phones

In Finland, a decision was made to completely abandon fixed telephone communication, which became a symbol of technological progress in the 20th century. One of the largest operators in the country, Elisa, announced that it will completely shut down all landline telephone networks in the region by June 30, 2026. Currently, the number of subscribers using this service is several thousand.

According to Yle, at the end of April 2026, a warning letter will be sent to clients about the disconnection of the city telephone. It also offers alternative solutions for switching communication services. The company notes that after the subscription is completed, it is possible to retain the home phone number - it can be transferred to the mobile network.

In Finland, two other major telecom operators - Telia and DNA - also previously announced the phased termination of the inpatient service. Telia abandoned this direction in 2019, while DNA began to gradually reduce it from 2021. Local publications assess this as the end of the era when home phones were the main means of communication between people and families.
