In China’s city of Shanghai, an unexpected and alarming incident was observed: a ground collapse with a width of approximately 10–20 meters occurred within a few seconds. Into the pit where the ground “opened up”, part of the road, construction materials, and temporary structures fell.
According to preliminary information, there are no victims. Drivers and pedestrians managed to move away from the dangerous area in time. Workers at the construction site were promptly evacuated.
According to the specialists’ initial assumptions, this situation may have been caused by metro construction works as well as a water leak detected a day earlier. That is, there is a possibility that the ground layer became wet, loosened, and as a result suddenly gave way.
Interestingly, in 2024 a similar ground collapse was also recorded in the same area. At present, specialists are carrying out inspection work to determine the causes of the incident.
Such situations can turn into a major danger in “one second”. Therefore, if the inspection conclusions and safety measures are strengthened in time, it will be possible to prevent the next major mishaps.
