Norodom Siamoni battles cancer

King Norodom Siamoni of Cambodia has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. This was reported by the country's Ministry of Information.

The 72-year-old monarch is currently undergoing treatment in Beijing. According to doctors' recommendations, the period of stay there is planned to be extended from one to three months.

In his address, the King stated that the disease was confirmed after detailed medical examinations. In official Cambodia, the monarchy today is largely symbolic, with the main role in political life belonging to former Prime Minister Hun Sen for many years.

For information, King Siamoni came from the field of art, and previously worked as a ballet master and diplomat. He has held the country's throne since 2004.
