Tajikistan banknote receives recognition at international competition

Tajikistan's 100 somoni banknote, introduced into circulation in 2025, has received international recognition. It was nominated as one of the world's best currency notes in the prestigious "Banknote of the Year" competition.
According to the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), approximately 100 new banknotes were issued worldwide during 2025. Of these, only 17 were deemed innovative in terms of design and technology and included in the final list.
From Central Asia, banknotes from Russia (1,000 rubles) and Kazakhstan (1,000 tenge) also participated in this list alongside Tajikistan.
Harmony of National History and Modern Design
The 100 somoni bill is designed in bright colors—blue, light blue, pink, and green. Its design reflects Tajikistan's historical heritage and symbols of statehood.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Ismoil Somoni and the famous Samanid Mausoleum. It also includes the coat of arms of Tajikistan and commemorative logos.
The reverse side depicts modern state symbols—the parliament building, the national flag, and inscriptions in both national and English languages.

Strong Security System
The banknote is equipped with high-level security elements. It features a watermark, color-shifting effects, a security thread with a hidden "100" figure, and complex geometric patterns.
It was printed by the German company Giesecke & Devrient and was released into circulation on October 30, 2025.
List of Winners
According to the results of the competition, the grand prize went to the 200 guilder "underwater" themed banknote of Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Subsequent places were taken by the banknotes of Fiji and Zambia. The top five also included the currencies of the Falkland Islands and Papua New Guinea.
Being nominated in the IBNS competition is considered a significant international recognition. This project evaluates a banknote not only as a means of payment but also as a symbol of art and national identity.
