Horrific armed attack on one of the largest mosques in the USA

A horrific tragedy has occurred in San Diego, California, deeply saddening the Muslim community. An armed attack at the county's largest mosque and Islamic center has shocked the local population and the global community. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl announced that the bloody incident is being investigated as a "hate crime" and that the FBI has been involved in the investigation.

The good news is that all students at the daytime religious school located on the mosque grounds were immediately accounted for and moved to a safe location after the attack. However, a security guard who sacrificed his life to prevent a larger massacre at the mosque complex became a true hero. This brave man, a father of eight, stood in the way of the gunmen and saved the lives of dozens of innocent worshippers.

The police chief praised his courage, stating, "His actions were truly heroic, and he undoubtedly saved many lives today." Unfortunately, the bodies of three Muslim men associated with the mosque were found at the scene.

Details of the attack

At an evening press conference, it was reported that two hours before the shooting, police received a distressing call from a woman. The mother stated that her son's mental state was unstable, and the teenager, prone to suicide, had taken three firearms from the house and a car, fleeing in an unknown direction. She also mentioned that her son, wearing camouflage, had an accomplice with him.

While police began searching and sending patrol units to nearby schools and shopping centers, gunshots were heard from inside the mosque. According to witnesses, about 30 shots were fired from a semi-automatic weapon. No shots were fired by the nearly 100 police officers who arrived at the scene within 4 minutes. While fleeing, the attackers shot at a landscaping worker on the street, but he survived because he was wearing a hard hat. Shortly after, police found the bodies of two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, inside a car a few neighborhoods away — they had committed suicide.

Hate letter and official response

A letter filled with hate rhetoric and insults was found near the teenager who committed the crime, but it did not contain direct threats against this specific mosque.

This horrific event, occurring just a week before the major holiday of Eid al-Adha that Muslims were eagerly awaiting, has caused even deeper pain.

"We have never seen such a horrific tragedy in our history. Targeting a sacred place where people worship the Creator is the most vile and despicable act," said Islamic Center Imam Taha Hassan.

California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly condemned this act of terrorism, stating that the state administration will not tolerate any religious-based intimidation. US President Donald Trump also called the incident a "terrible situation" and said the matter would be under serious supervision. Experts believe that armed conflicts in the Middle East are causing an increase in Islamophobia and hate crimes worldwide, particularly in the US and Europe.

In your opinion, to what extent should the security of places of worship be strengthened to ensure peace and tolerance in the world?
